Subject: Site visit to Wanjie/Zibo, China
I took the opportunity to visit the Wanjie Proton Therapy facility after the World Congress on Medical Physics and Bioengineering that was held in Seoul, Korea. The flight from Seoul to Ji Nan, the closest airport to Wanjie/Zibo, was only 1.5 hours. The airport at Ji Nan is new, modern, and large for its present flow of traffic. There is an excellent freeway from Ji Nan to Zibo.
The purpose of the trip was to conduct a site visit to determine the situation at Wanjie and Zibo with regard to the PTCOG 46 meeting there in 2007. You will recall that the PTCOG meeting itself will be held in Zibo, which is, at most, 30 minutes from Wanjie. Zibo is a city of about 4 million residents and, like many Chinese cities, it has a very modern and flourishing downtown area, with many of the outlying districts still somewhat undeveloped.
I helped choose the venue for the meeting which contains a large auditorium and good adjacent rooms for vendors, posters and coffee breaks. In the same compound as the meeting hall there are two hotels, both with good accommodations. One of these hotels has very good rooms for about $35/night (US) and would be suitable for any guests, but is especially suitable for students or those on limited budgets. Within a 5-10 minute walk there is a 3-4 star hotel (I forget which but it is extremely nice) – these rooms start at about $85/night (US). I found everything in China to be very inexpensive and I recommend this trip for family members. There is incredible shopping nearby where one can buy almost anything that is available in US or European high-end stores but at much lower prices. The downtown area seems to be very safe and there should be no problem with people walking throughout the area during the day or at night.
The proton therapy facility in Wanjie has been treating patients since December, 2004 on the fixed beam and since April 2005 on the gantry. They had treated 266 patients by September 2006. I observed treatments and treatment planning and was impressed with how well they are doing. There are two additional vaults for gantries that can be installed in the future.
For sight seeing, there are two especially important trips that can be easily made: 1) Tai Mountain, one of the 4-5 most famous mountains in China, and 2) the place where Confucius lived, which has been memorized by several Chinese Emperors with beautiful shrines. I visited both places in one day and it was an incredible experience. Also, Zibo is on the super-highway between Beijing and Shanghai and one can get to either place easily by train. My opinion is that the Wanjie/Zibo meeting should be a great one and I highly encourage all PTCOG members to attend.

对于旅游方面，淄博附近有两个很好而且很方便的景点：（1）泰山，是中国5座最著名的山之一；（2）孔府，是中国思想家孔子居住过的地方，中国的几代帝王都很尊崇他。一天之内我参观了这两个景点，印象都非常好。另外从淄博到北京或上海都可以通过现代化的高速公路很方便的到达。我个人认为第46届国际质子大会在淄博召开将会非常成功，我建议所有国际质子协会成员都到淄博参加第46届国际质子大会。
